The Ubumuntu Arts Festival was founded by Hope Azeda, a visionary in contemporary Rwandan theatre and the Artistic Director of Mashirika Performing Arts and Media Company, a leading theatre company in Rwanda. The festival was born from Hope’s leadership proposal to the Africa Leadership Project, which was met with enthusiasm—and thus began the Ubumuntu journey.

Launched in 2015, the festival takes place annually after the 100-day commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. Held at the outdoor amphitheater of the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, it gathers artists from around the globe to Kigali, Rwanda. Activities include performances, workshops, panel discussions, and visits to genocide memorial sites.

The festival is free and open to everyone, relying on the generosity of donors and sponsors to make it possible.

What does it mean to truly know yourself? U.S.-based dance company Ariel Rivka Dance's work is a cathartic journey through identity, authenticity, and the courage it takes to be seen. Featuring Selves ii, Unorthodox, and The Milk - all performed to original music - the company pulses with intimacy and power that moves from anger and disbelief to clarity and connection. To be our true selves is not only possible—it is welcome, and invited. Bold, honest, and deeply relational: this is Ariel Rivka Dance at its most essential.

Matthew Westerby Company is a New York-based contemporary dance company that blends athletic physicality with striking spatial design and a subtle, resonant connection to music. This program features two powerful ensemble works, including nineteeneightyfour, created in collaboration with composer John P. Hastings, alongside a moving duet excerpt from City of Ashes, an intimate work reflecting on the AIDS crisis in New York City.

Stories and Strategies for International Dance Touring

Curious about what it takes to tour internationally as a U.S.-based dance artist? Join this interactive session designed specifically for early- to mid-career dance makers looking to take their work abroad. We’ll kick things off with personal stories and lessons learned from Gaspard Louis of Gaspard&Dancers (NC) and Ariel Grossman of Ariel Rivka Dance (NY), two companies that have recently made international touring a regular part of their work. They’ll share how they first started touring internationally, the unexpected challenges they faced, and how performing internationally has shaped their work and visibility at home. This chat will be followed by a Q&A and then attendees can join breakout rooms to network with other peers that are seeking to tour abroad.
